Polynucleotides vs Profhilo: What’s the Difference & Which One is Right for You?

Two of the most exciting injectable treatments currently making waves are Polynucleotides and Profhilo. At The MediClinic, we’re proud to offer both options as part of our regenerative aesthetic portfolio, but many clients ask: What’s the difference between the two? And which one is better for my skin goals?

Let’s break it down.

What Are Polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are a regenerative skin treatment derived from purified DNA fragments, usually sourced from salmon or trout. While that might sound unusual, these biocompatible molecules have remarkable effects on the skin. They work by:

  • Stimulating fibroblasts, encouraging your skin to produce more collagen and elastin

  • Promoting tissue repair and regeneration, ideal for acne scars, sun damage, or dull complexions

  • Improving hydration, firmness, and skin tone over time

  • Reducing inflammation, making it suitable even for sensitive or reactive skin

Think of polynucleotides as your skin's biological fertilizer  they enhance cellular repair and regeneration at a deep, foundational level.

What Is Profhilo?

Profhilo is often described as a “bio-remodelling” treatment. It’s made from a high concentration of pure hyaluronic acid (HA)  but unlike traditional fillers, it doesn't add volume or structure. Instead, it spreads evenly under the skin to:

  • Hydrate deeply, thanks to its moisture-binding hyaluronic acid

  • Improve skin elasticity and texture

  • Stimulate the production of collagen and elastin through a unique slow-release mechanism

  • Deliver a subtle lifting and tightening effect

Profhilo is ideal for those experiencing crepey, lax, or dehydrated skin, especially in areas like the face, neck, décolletage, or hands.

Polynucleotides vs Profhilo: What’s the Difference?

While both treatments aim to improve skin quality, they work in very different ways and serve slightly different purposes.

Polynucleotides primarily focus on deep cellular regeneration. Their main ingredient – purified DNA fragments – works by stimulating your skin’s natural healing processes, encouraging fibroblast activity, and boosting collagen and elastin production. This makes them ideal for treating skin that’s been damaged by acne, UV exposure, or inflammation. They also calm redness and help with rosacea or sensitive skin. Results are gradual, typically building over 3 to 4 sessions spaced a few weeks apart, and are especially effective for clients looking for long-term repair and renewal.

Profhilo, on the other hand, is centred around hydration and skin remodelling. Using high concentrations of hyaluronic acid, it deeply hydrates the skin and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. Rather than volumising like traditional fillers, Profhilo spreads evenly under the skin, improving texture, elasticity, and firmness with minimal downtime. Most people see noticeable results after just 1 or 2 sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart, making it a popular choice for those seeking a fast-acting glow-up or lifting effect, particularly for ageing or crepey skin.

In terms of suitability, polynucleotides are well-tolerated by all skin types, including very sensitive or reactive skin. Profhilo is best suited for clients in their 30s and above who are beginning to experience dullness, dryness, or sagging. While each treatment offers unique benefits, they can also complement each other beautifully when used as part of a tailored aesthetic plan.

So, Which One Is Right for You?

It depends on your goals:

  • If you’re concerned about skin damage, early ageing, or acne scarring, polynucleotides may be your best bet.

  • If you’re focused on hydration, glow, and firmness, Profhilo offers visible results quickly.

  • Want both? These treatments can be combined strategically for a comprehensive regenerative approach. At The MediClinic, we often design personalised treatment plans that harness the benefits of both.

Our experienced practitioners will assess your skin during a detailed consultation and tailor a treatment protocol suited to your unique needs. Whether you're new to injectables or looking to upgrade your current skincare routine, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
